Very near Alicante we have a unique village that joins in its streets sea, culture, nature and an alive history. We suggest you to visit the Mediterranean village of El Campello. 

The village of El Campello is just 13 km north of Alicante, we can reach there on practical trip by TRAM from Alicante city centre.

El Campello is closed to Villajoyosa another village we have been spoken recently about. Its intense activity during these summer months deserves a separate entrance as our Spanish Language School, which on Summer time works full speed ahead  and receives students from all over the world for learning Spanish in Spain.

In our School you will find courses for any needs: for beginners till advanced learners, Intensive Spanish Courses of 15, 20 or 25 hours per week and personalized tuition in private lessons. 

The courses’ offer expands with combined sport and dance classes courses plus Spanish, Spanish for Businesses or for students over 50 years. It is central for all our courses the immersion in the cultural life of the Region of Valencia and today’s excursion is one of the fixed visits we offer to our students: the village of El Campello.

During the summer El Campello takes advantage of the arrival of domestic and
foreign tourists to present the best of its rich and varied heritage. 

One of the reasons for its success, during the summer the tourist offices do a stage play in Illeta and Villa Marco taking you through the historical journey from the first century BC Iberian settlement to the Roman era and the Middle Ages with its constant pirate attacks 

In the entrance to the Manor House called Villa Marco it is performed a guided visit which shows all the secrets of its gardens in an era of stately splendor. The large history of El Campello allows all these little “games”. Apart from the possible tours its worth stopping at the archaeological site of La Illeta. 

Our students enjoy it’s 23 km of coastline by the sea, also with cycling and hiking routes along the promenade street La Mar with its colorful fishermen's houses or along Muchavista Beach. But they also can discover other hidden coves of El Campello such as Cova del Llop Marí which can be reached by walking or ... diving or Cala Nostra and wonderful beaches like Almadrava beach. 

In addition to the above, from mid-September everyone can enjoy CIRCARTE Contemporary Circus Festival, which brings you the opportunity to enjoy circus’ performances from companies coming across the Region of Valencia and Spain. Performances enliven the streets and squares of the village with their spectacular shows.

We must also highlight its Moors and Christians’ festival held from October 11^th to 15^th. If you cannot join this festival with us, you can enjoy its delight in this video. It requests a special mention the Moorish’s landing on the beach at dawn.

Discover the island of Tabarca!

Today we are going to take the boat to see Tabarca, the largest island in Region of Valencia and very close to the city of Alicante. Originally it was a refuge for pirates and currently it boats a monumental and natural heritage first of its kind in Spain.

The coast of Alicante is very diverse and it’s just a short hop from the port or from nearby Santa Pola to Tabarca. The largest island of the entire region and the only inhabited one, but with less than 100 persons during the year. At the Spanish school in Alicante Colegio Internacional we like to get involved in the wide education of our students who come from all points of the globe and to convey the mediterranean essence that is especially felt in this city. As one of our weekend activities, our excursion to the island of Tabarca has a special niche; the pure sea air, a rich history and a unique marine ecosystem. Here are some facts:

Although founded by the Romans the first settlements in Tabarca date back to the fourteenth century when it was used to protect the island from the increasingly regular occupation by Barbary pirates who arrived from Algiers and wanted to use it as a base against Alicante. Throughout the centuries it has had many names: Planesia, San Pablo, New Tabarca Alones and finally, named Tabarca by King Carlos III following the arrival in 1770 of the Genoese refugees from the island of Tabarka in the Tunisian seas. Until the mid-nineteenth century the island was an important naval strategic base.

With a surface area that is less than 1 km2 and only 2 km long, it’s  less than 5 km from Santa Pola and just over 20 km to the city of Alicante, Tabarca sometimes called New Tabarca or Isla Plana reaches 15 meters above sea level! Its resident population is now around the 59 but this increases greatly during the summer with the arrival of tourists coming to spend the day and tour the island. A trail around the entire island gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the landscape, rich fauna and flora, as well as the activities of the numerous seabirds. It is a hot spot for scuba divers because since 1986 the island has been declared a Marine Reserve.

For such a small place Tabarca also has several monuments and  attractions and, indeed, it is considered an artistic and historic attraction. The eighteenth century wall maintains its charm, with doors called Levante, the Trancada or San Miguel, and other places whose ruins have fallen into the sea; the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, eighteenth century and of the Baroque style, or the Lighthouse, 1854, these attractions have been made into interesting poscards. The New Museum Tabarca is  a must see. It’s  located in the almadrava (and old fishing warehouse ). The museum visit takes you through the different historical periods of the island, its people and its natural heritage.

As you can from the above the trip to Tabarca with its beaches, crystal clear waters and history is a great way to escape the hustle of the city and yet it’s only an hour away by boat. In the port you can enjoy the local, traditional cuisine in a tranquil setting.

Descubrimos la isla de Tabarca

Hoy cogemos el barco para conocer Tabarca, la isla más grande de la Comunidad Valenciana y muy cercana a la ciudad de Alicante. Con un origen pirata actualmente presume de un patrimonio monumental y natural de primera.

La costa de Alicante es muy diversa, apenas dando un salto desde su puerto o desde el cercano de Santa Pola llegamos a Tabarca, la isla más grande de toda la región y también la única habitada, aunque por menos de 100 personas durante el año. En la escuela de español Colegio Internacional Alicante nos gusta implicarnos en el aprendizaje de nuestros alumnos llegados de todos los puntos del globo y transmitirles la esencia mediterránea que se respira especialmente en esta ciudad. Por eso en nuestras actividades para los fines de semana la excursión a la isla de Tabarca tiene un hueco especial; puro aroma marinero, rica historia y un ecosistema marino único. Aquí tenéis una muestra.

Aunque se han encontrado restos romanos los primeros asentamientos de población estables en Tabarca se remontan al siglo XIV cuando se empezó a proteger la isla de la ocupación cada vez más regular de piratas berberiscos llegados desde Argel que la usaban como base de operaciones frente a Alicante. A lo largo de los siglos su nombre ha ido variando: Planesia, San Pablo, Alones y finalmente Nueva Tabarca, tras la llegada en 1770 de los refugiados genoveses desde la isla de Tabarka en aguas de Túnez por orden del rey Carlos III. Hasta mediados del siglo XIX fue un importante punto estratégico naval.

Con una superficie que no llega al km cuadrado, 2 km de extensión y a una distancia de menos de 5 km al cabo de Santa Pola y a poco más de 20 de la ciudad de Alicante, la isla de Tabarca también recibe el nombre de Nueva Tabarca o Isla Plana por su escasa altitud que apenas llega a los 15 metros. Su población fija ahora mismo está en torno a los 59 habitantes que encuentran mucha más compañía durante el verano con la visita de turistas que llegan para pasar el día y recorrer la isla. Un sendero que rodea toda la isla sirve para decubrir el paisaje y la rica fauna y flora, con numerosa actividad de aves marinas. Es un punto caliente para los amantes del submarinismo ya que desde 1986 la isla está declarada Reserva Marina.

Para una superficie tan pequeña Tabarca tiene además varios puntos monumentales de interés y, de hecho, está considerada toda ella Conjunto Histórico-Artístico. La Muralla del siglo XVIII mantiene su encanto, con puertas como las de Levante, la Trancada o la de San Miguel, y otros rincones cuyas ruinas caen sobre el mar; la Iglesia de San Pedro y San Pablo, también del XVIII y estilo barroco, o el Faro, de 1854, que siempre ofrece las mejores postales. Una parada en el Museo Nueva Tabarca es obligatoria; ubicado en la almadrava (antiguo almacén de pesca) del puerto recorre los distintos períodos históricos de la isla, con sus pobladores y el inventario de su patrimonio natural.

Aquí tenéis todos los datos necesarios para organizar la excursión a Tabarca con cantidad de barcos para hacer la travesía de apenas una hora y pasar un estupendo día de mar y playas de agua cristalina lejos del bullicio de la costa. En el puerto encontramos buena oferta gastronómica y se puede degustar el tradicional caldero isleño.

What to do in ALICANTE?

To complement our courses and to help our students, the school offers a wide activities program.

Alicante, with a population of 250.000 offers an interesting range of cultural activities and sport installations: libraries, art-galleries, cultural halls, museums, open-air concerts and a 19th century theatre with an extensive program...

Depending on the season in which you happen to be staying with us, you will fall in love with Alicante and its FIESTAS all year round:

FROM ALTEA TO BENIDORM. VISITS WITH OUR STUDENTS

From Altea to Benidorm.

The contrasts in Alicante.

With summer in sight and weekends to enjoy, we propose a route of contrasting differences from the lively Benidorm to the tranquil white village of Altea with its warm welcome.

With the mild climate weekend trips are almost at any time of year, but it is in spring time when the weather is perfect to explore the Region of Valencia. With Colegio Internacional Alicante we go to the northern part of the province to discover two of its most symbolic villages, despite being poles apart in their urban design.

At just 50 km from Alicante and around 130 to Valencia, Benidorm is one of the icons of the Mediterranean coast and internationally known centre of attraction for tourists from around the world but especially English and German. Its profile is marked by numerous skyscrapers which place countless hotels and apartment blocks, an urban design that already in the 60s of the twentieth century, turned into a unique and vital interest: tourism.

Benidorm is the third largest city in Spain in number of hotel beds, only after Madrid and Barcelona, ​​which gives us an idea of ​​the economic engine that it represents. Located between mountains like” Sierra Gelada”, “Cortina” and the impressive” Puig Campana”, its climate is perfect for tourist all year round. The plan is simple: enjoy the coastline of five beaches: the largest “Levante” and “Poniente’s” beach, but to escape the excessive noise, yes, you should go for example to “Cala Almadrava”.

Not only the beaches, nightlife but theme parks are another of its tourist attractions. You can see the long list of amenities. Although sometimes just a scenic drive to see its spectacular buildings it is worth the visit. “Neguri Gane”, “ Bali III”or “Intempo Hotel” are some of the illustrious skyscrapers of Benidorm.

A little more than a quarter of an hour north to Benidorm is Altea, a town that is the opposite of Benidorm: small, comfy and with only a few major buildings, despite of also having an 

outstanding tourist population, which are accommodated in chalets and bungalows on both sides of the bay. Which is formed in a circle from the old town called Altea la Vella and sheltered from another mountain “Mascarat”.

The silhouette of Altea, with its blue-domed church on top of the old town all whitewashed houses, is symbolic of the Costa Blanca. A stroll through its narrow and steep streets with spectacular views over the Mediterranean is a great idea at any time of year. If you are looking for tranquillity, this is a good place to stay, although in the months of July and August it is also hustle and bustle. Aside from having a pebble beach and clean water, the cultural activities are usually constant in this village.  In the second week of August the “Castell de L'Olla”, a fireworks display takes place that is launched from the sea.

De Altea a Benidorm

Los contrastes de Alicante

Con el verano ya a la vista y fines de semana soleados para disfrutar os proponemos una ruta de contrastes en la provincia de Alicante, de la llamativa Benidorm hasta la blanca y acogedora Altea. Una región que tiene muchas caras.

La suavidad del clima facilita las excursiones de fin de semana casi en cualquier época del año pero es en primavera al empezar a vislumbrarse el verano, con el calor y el sol incontestable cuando más apetece lanzarse a conocer más y mejor la Comunidad Valenciana. De la mano del Colegio Internacional de Alicante nos vamos hasta la parte norte de la provincia para conocer dos de sus localidades más emblemáticas, pese a ser polos opuestos en su concepción urbanística.

A apenas 50 km de Alicante, y alrededor de 130 de Valencia se encuentra Benidorm, uno de los iconos de la costa mediterránea, conocida internacionalmente y centro de atracción de turistas de todo el mundo pero especialmente ingleses y alemanes. Su perfil está marcado por numerosos rascacielos que albergan innumerables hoteles y bloques de apartamentos, en un diseño urbano que ya en los años 60 del siglo XX, viró hacia un interés único y fundamental: el turismo.

Benidorm es la tercera ciudad de España en cantidad de plazas hoteleras, sólo después de Madrid y Barcelona, lo que da una idea del motor económico que representa. Ubicada entre la sierra Gelada, la Cortina y el imponente Puig Campana su clima es dulce todo el año lo que hace que tenga visitantes durante todas las estaciones. El plan es sencillo: disfrutar en su litoral de hasta cinco playas, las más extensas las de Levante y Poniente, aunque para escapar del excesivo bullicio, eso sí, es recomendable ir a la Cala de la Almadrava, por ejemplo.  

Junto al reclamo playero la vida nocturna y los parques temáticos son otros de sus reclamos turísticos. Aquí puedes consultar la larga lista de lugares de ocio. Aunque a veces simplemente un paseo panorámico para contemplar sus espectaculares construcciones ya vale la visita. Neguri Gane, el Hotel Bali III, o el Intempo son algunos de los rascacielos insignes de Benidorm.

A poco más de un cuarto de hora al norte encontramos Altea, una localidad que es la antítesis de Benidorm: pequeña, recogida y con escasas construcciones de envergadura a pesar de tener una destacada población turística también. En su caso la ocupación se reparte en chalets y casas bajas a ambos lados de la bahía que se forma, en círculo desde el núcleo antiguo conocido como Altea la Vella y al abrigo del Mascarat.

La silueta de Altea, con la cúpula azul de su Iglesia en lo alto del casco viejo todo blanco y encalado, es emblemática de la Costa Blanca. Un paseo por sus callejuelas estrechas y empinadas con espectaculares vistas al Mediterráneo es una gran idea en cualquier época del año. Si se quiere calma, éste es un buen lugar, aunque en los meses de julio y agosto el bullicio está también asegurado. Aparte de tener unas calas de piedra tranquila y de agua limpia, las actividades culturales suelen ser constantes en este municipio. La segunda semana de agosto tiene lugar además el Castell de L’Olla, un espectáculo pirotécnico que se lanza desde el mar.

Discover the traveler in you. Hans Christian Andersen and Alicante.

Learn or improve your Spanish and discover a fairytale city . On the occasion of the celebration of the day of the Children's Book in March; we discovered, with our students, the visit of the famous fairytale writer HC Andersen to Alicante. We recreated the experiences he wrote about in his travel book so many years ago in 1862. Just as when the travelers of the nineteenth century wandered through the streets and boulevards described in his book, we saw not  many things have changed.

Come and discover with us the friendly people from your first arrival:  “The train hastened on, but it was midnight before we reached Alicante (…) on our arrival at the station at Alicante (…) But our good star was in the ascendant. We had a proof of the Spanish people’s kind consideration for strangers.”

Listen to the joyful sound of our markets and be amazed by the variety of fruits and vegetables: “Near Alameda, out by the sea-shore, one comes upon a low but long building, a sort of bazaar for butchers, fishermen, and fruiterers… There was a constant buzz of voices paleying between the sellers and the purchares. From the meat and the fish markets, we passed to that of the vegetables; oranges lay here in heaps like potatoes with us; colossal onions and grapes hung round the pillars, and seemed to spring out of the dry wood.”

Taste the traditional Alicante wine, flavorful grapes, pink pomegranates, sweet cherries, almonds, oranges ...: “They brought us splendid fruits- firm, juicy muscatel grapes, and sparkling wine, genuine Alicante. The sound of the sea was our music; the stars of heaven, an illumination. It was summer night; and many, many such there were in sunny Spain.”

Relax on the “Explanada “, sit in one of its cafes and enjoy lively conversation with friends  ....: …” Whitewashed, flat-roofed houses with balconies, were the principal features of the place.. Alameda looked like a fragment clipped from one o the Boulevards of Paris… people were sitting there on the stone benches looking at the promenaders….

Loiter around the old town, discover magnificent buildings, slender palm trees, secluded romantic squares: “Outside of this place stretched the principal streets of the town, with fine buildings, among which the town-hall stood prominently forth, with a turret in each of is four corners. The cathedral was situated but a few steps from this…”

And above all, do not forget to enjoy magical nights, parties, dances, festivals ....: “For the first time we heard next day of the Danish Consul, who, at about the distance of a mile from town, had been celebrating a people’s festival. Ladies and gentlemen, in the garbs of the common people, had by torch-light dance until a late hour at night in the open square near the sea. What a pity that we had not known of this before!”

¡¡Descubre al viajero que hay en ti! Hans Christian Andersen y Alicante!!

Aprende o mejora tu español y descubre una ciudad de libro, de libro de viajes como el que escribió el escritor danés, Hans Christian Andersen en el ya lejano 1862  La semana pasada con motivo de la celebración del día del libro infantil y juvenil descubrimos con nuestros alumnos la visita del famoso escritor  de cuentos H. C.  Andersen a Alicante. Como viajeros del  S. XIX paseamos por las calles y bulevares descritos en su libro y vimos como no tantas cosas habían cambiado.

Ven, descubre con nosotros la amabilidad de sus gentes desde tu misma llegada: "El tren corría veloz, pero antes de medianoche no llegaríamos a Alicante (...) en nuestra llegada a la estación de Alicante (...), lució nuestra buena estrella; una vez más los españoles nos dieron muestra de amabilidad y cortesía para con los extranjeros".

Escucha el sonido alegre de sus mercados y sorpréndete de la variedad de sus frutas y hortalizas: "Cerca de la alameda hay, de cara al puerto, una especie de bazar o mercado de carniceros, pescaderos y vendedores de hortalizas.... Por doquier oíase el zumbido y el murmullo del incesante parloteo de compradores y vendedores. De los puestos de la carne y el pescado pasábase a la sección de verdulería. Aquí amontonaban las naranjas como las patatas en Dinamarca; cebollas y uvas enormes colgaban de las vigas verticales, cual si brotasen de la madera muerta."

Degusta el vino tradicional de Alicante, saborea tersas uvas, rosadas granadas, dulces cerezas, almendras, naranjas…

"Nos trajeron frutas incomparables, uvas de moscatel zumosas y tersas, vino llameante, el típico de Alicante. El rumor del reflujo del mar, fue nuestra música de sobremesa, las estrellas del cielo, la iluminación; hacía una noche de verano como no lo había experimentado nunca."

Relájate en la Explanada de España, siéntate en uno de sus cafés y disfruta de animadas charlas con los amigos.…: "La fisonomía de la ciudad la componen casas encaladas, con techos planos y balcones volantes; (...) y una alameda que evoca un fragmento de boulevard parisino (...) la gente se sienta en fila en los bancos de piedra y se dedica a mirar a los que pasean (...)".

Callejea por la ciudad, descubre magníficos edificios, esbeltas palmeras, recoletas plazas románticas: "Por fuera se extendía la calle principal de la ciudad, con edificios imponentes, entre los cuales destacaba, más que ninguno, el Ayuntamiento (...)".

Y sobre todo, no dejes de disfrutar de noches mágicas, fiestas, bailes,  tradiciones….: “… hasta el día siguiente no supimos por el cónsul danés que a una legua de la ciudad se había celebrado una fiesta popular. Damas y caballeros, en refinados trajes regionales, habían bailado al aire libre, junto al mar, hasta altas horas de la noche. ¡Qué pena no haberlo sabido antes!”

Con Colegio Internacional Alicante no sentirás la pena de Andersen de haberse perdido un gran espectáculo de luces, fuego, música y baile.
